Ingredients

  • 1 lb. 8 oz. shredded hash browns
  • 1 lb. ground beef, 85% lean
  • 2 tsp. kosher salt, divided
  • 2 tsp. ground black pepper, divided
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 medium onion, diced and caramelized
  • 8 oz. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream of chicken soup
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9" round cake pan.
  2. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, and cook, breaking it into crumbles, until browned. Season with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper, and the garlic powder. Stir to combine, then transfer the cooked beef to a medium bowl.
  3. Add the ketchup, mustard, and caramelized onions to the beef. Stir well to evenly mix and set aside.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded hash browns, Cheddar cheese, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, melted butter, and the remaining salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly until everything is evenly distributed.
  5. Spread half of the hash brown mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared cake pan, pressing it into a firm layer.
  6. Spoon the beef mixture over the hash brown layer, spreading it out evenly to create a second layer.
  7. Top with the remaining hash brown mixture, pressing gently to create a flat, even layer that completely covers the beef.
  8. Place the pan in the oven and bake, uncovered, for 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until the top is golden and the pie is set.
  9. Once baked, let the pie rest for a few minutes before slicing it into 8 wedges.
  10. Serve each slice with a drizzle of ketchup, if desired, and enjoy!
